Visit www.newcastlede.gov/specialevents for info on dozens of events that celebrate African American heritage and traditions

Wilmington, DE
– On Saturday, February 2 at 10:30 a.m., New Castle County kicks off its month-long celebration of Black History Month with a celebration of American Sound: The Evolution of Black Music at the Walnut Street YMCA, 1000 North Walnut Street, Wilmington. This special program highlights the impact African American musicians have made on American culture. During the program, County Executive Matt Meyer will present a proclamation declaring February as Black History Month in New Castle County. This is the 5th year that New Castle County has honored Black History Month with a celebration at the Walnut Street YMCA. Last year 350 people attended the event.

"As Prince once taught us, our clothes, our hair, we don't care," County Executive Matt Meyer said, "It's all about being there. And this Saturday at 10:30 am. at the Walnut Street YMCA, you need to be there as we celebrate Black History in music, from Cab Calloway to Beyoncé and everyone in between. Come listen, sing and dance at our county's annual black history celebration."

American Sound: The Evolution of Black Music is presented by the New Castle County Division of Community Resources in collaboration with the Walnut Street YMCA Black Achievers. This free program is comprised of a combination of informational displays, local vendors, as well as live performances woven within a spoken narrative of the history of music in America.
