As part of the unified and relentless efforts by all of County government to bring those to justice who have committed heinous violent crimes, New Castle County Council approved an additional $10,000 to assist with rewards for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of suspects involved in violent crimes in New Castle County.
During the February 24th New Castle County Council meeting, an Emergency Ordinance was passed to approve funding for the Public Safety Rewards Program. This funding will help to supplement the reward program announced by County Executive Thomas Gordon earlier.
The Emergency Ordinance was introduced by Council members William “Bill” Bell and Jea Street who both serve as Co-chairmen of the Public Safety Committee. The ordinance was subsequently sponsored by all members of New Castle County Council. The funding from the Public Safety Rewards Program will be used to help solve violent crimes in New Castle County.
“Council was pleased to approve the reward money by unanimous vote,” said Councilman Jea Street. “We will do all we can to help our Police Department apprehend those who use guns in New Castle County. I believe it will be an asset in encouraging those with information to come forward.”
“As a Co-Chairman of the Public Safety Committee, I wanted to affirm New Castle County Council’s support to the Police Department by drafting this emergency ordinance” said Councilman Bell. “Any help we, as a council, can provide to stop such senseless violence in our communities and help our police bring those to justice who commit these crimes confirms our commitment to the citizens of New Castle County.”
County Gordon says, “County Council’s approval of the additional reward money is a further example of the continuing support provided to the New Castle County Police Department and its efforts to combat crime. Both the legislative and executive branches of the New Castle County government are committed to working together to solve these serious offenses and bring closure to the victim’s families.”
The Director of Public Safety, Joseph Bryant, Jr. stated “We thank all of County Council for the unanimous vote to approve additional funding for the Public Safety Rewards Program. It is our hope that even a small tip will help us arrest the suspects involved in these unsolved homicides.”
“I would like to recognize the County Executive and Council for implementing the reward program within New Castle County” said Colonel E. M. Setting. “The addition of this program will assist the Police Department’s exhaustive efforts to solve these crimes of violence.
"We hope the Public Safety Rewards Program will encourage anyone with information to come forward. Any piece of information that the public provides can be the key to making an arrest. The program is an important effort to reward those who do what is right and just, by working with the police to hold those accountable for their criminal actions,” said Colonel Setting. “On behalf of the entire police department, I wish to thank Executive Gordon, Councilman Street, Councilmen Bell and all of County Council for their initiative to enhance the Rewards Program.”
