New Castle County and DelDOT are concerned about the water quality of Delaware's streams, beaches and rivers. As a result, they are taking action to minimize the pollutants that have caused beach closures, fish kills, toxic streams and ponds. New Castle County and DelDOT are committed to programs that will help clean these waterways and create a safe environment for our community. A few of these programs include:

Inventory and Inspection Programs
New Castle County and DelDOT are inventorying and inspecting drainage inlets and outlets in the stormwater drainage system. The goal of the inventory and inspection is to detect any illicit discharges and identify maintenance needs before a major problem arises. To learn more, please see Monitoring Programs and Drainage System Inventory.

Stormwater Ponds
Stormwater ponds are designed to trap sediment and pollutants, reduce flooding, and provide wildlife habitat. New Castle County and DelDOT will continue to look for opportunities to make drainage improvements.

Construction Sites
The County has implemented many procedures during site planning to minimize short and long term impacts to water quality. For more information, please see Construction Sites.

Streets and Highways
Our programs for operating and maintaining public streets, roads and highways minimize the discharge of pollutants. For more information, please see Streets and Highways.

BMPs
New Castle County and DelDOT operate and maintain public streets, roads, and highways to minimize the discharge of pollutants. Stormwater Best Management Practices or BMPs are practices that are used to reduce pollutants typically present in stormwater runoff, prior to the runoff entering streams and rivers. For more information, please see BMPs.

Public Education
New Castle County and DelDOT are committed to engaging the public in stormwater pollution prevention. We all have a responsibility to help keep our waterways clean. For more information, please see Public Education.
