Ancestry Library Edition (in-library use only)

Ancestry Library Edition contains more than 1.2 billion records in over 3,000 databases. It includes digitized images of the U.S. Federal Census from 1790 to 1930 and the UK Census Collection (1871-1901), and a special search engine of Birth, Marriage and Death records.

Note: due to publisher's guidelines, this database is only available for use inside the TIPCat Libraries. The link will not function from any other location.

A special service from NewsBank, this addition to their database allows you to search from their national archive of obituaries. Also includes full text articles from the News Journal (1999-present).

Full-text databases containing newspapers and magazines from the Civil War era. Includes Godey's Ladies Book, the Pennsylvania Gazette, the Pennsylvania Genealogical Catalogue, and several others.

Laptop UserDelaware Public Archives

A service of the Delaware State Library, the DPA contains historic photographs of Delaware locations, maps dating back to the 1800s, digitally archived documents of historical importance, and even audio files of things like World War II radio broadcasts and baseball games.

The main component of EBSCOhost's files, MasterFile contains over 2,000 general interest periodicals, 350 reference works, 100,000 images, and 82,000 biographies. Full-text articles are available.

Using the common EBSCOhost search interface, use keywords to search the full HTML-text contents of the latest edition of Funk & Wagnall's Encyclopedia. All EBSCOhost functions are available, including saving to your EBSCO account and e-mailing your articles to yourself.

Junior Reference Collection

This database provides kid-friendly tools for young researchers in elementary and middle school. It covers the subjects most frequently studied by middle-school students: science, authors, biographies, multicultural topics, and people and places. Entries are thorough, in-depth and written in clear concise terms.

Student Resource Center - Gold

Designed for the middle school student, this database collects articles from the American Decades series, the American Journeys series, UXL Biographies and Science, EXPLORING Novels and Short Stories, as well as articles from over 1,000 magazines.

Student Resource Center - Health

Appropriate for high school students and adults, this database offers access to over 60 full-text medical and health periodicals, a timeline describing over 500 historical medical events, and 300 photographs and diagrams. Topics covered include diseases, treatments, diagnostic equipment and major historic figures in the field of medicine and science.

Virtual Reference Collection

Contains the ability to cross-search the Encyclopedia of Clothing and Fashion, the Encyclopedia of Religions, Information Plus Reference Series, Reference Guide to World Literature and West's Encyclopedia of Law (see other entries on this page for descriptions of these sources).

Heritage Quest Online

This is a searchable database of US Census records in their original handwritten form from 1790-1930. Also includes ProQuest's Genealogy and Local History Collection of over 25,000 family and local history books, searchable by place, name and subject.

Kids InfoBits

This service is aimed at elementary school-aged kids. Similar to EBSCO Kids Search, it breaks down the Gale databases into subject headings, as well as allowing for traditional keyword searching. Articles retrieved should be of more interest to the age group, rather than the large-scale results through other access portals to Gale's services.

Thousands of poems, short stories, plays, and essays searchable by opening line, author, subject, or title. Includes explanations and bibliographies as well.

MEDLINE Plus

Created by the National Library of Medicine, MEDLINE connects you to citations and full-text articles from over 4,800 biomedical journals. MEDLINE covers practically all fields of medicine, including dentistry, veterinary medicine, and nursing.

Middle Search Plus

Appropriate for Middle School students, this database contains full text for nearly 150 popular Middle School magazines dating back to 1990. While searching, students may limit their search results by using the following limiters: periodicals, newspapers, reference books, biographies, primary source documents, and images. Features of this database include: Essential Documents in American History and an Image Collection containing photos, maps and flags.

Primary Search

Geared for an Elementary School audience, this database contains full text for more than 60 popular elementary school magazines including: Appleseeds, Boy's Life, Cobblestone, Cricket, Highlights, Ranger Rick and Science World. From the trusted names at Facts On File comes a new database:  Science Online.  Need ideas for Science Fair projects or experiments?  They have it.  Biographies of scientists?  They're here.  Diagrams and anatomy charts?  You bet.  Covers just about every scientific topic from Biology to Astronomy.

Searchasaurus

This database is designed with young researchers in mind. Combining 3 popular elementary and middle school databases (Primary Search, Middle School Plus and BookSource: Nonfiction), this database offers students an animated, colorful interface to introduce them to searching online. Searchasaurus allows search results to be limited by reading level so students can find information that is appropriate for their reading level.

SIRS Discoverer (Ending 7/31/08)

Allows elementary and middle school students to search by subject heading or browsable predefined subjects such as animals, countries, the environment, history and government, notable people, science, social issues and technology. Once a student selects a topic to browse, several articles relating to the topic are displayed. Reading levels and lexile scores for each article are available so students are able to find research on their appropriate reading level.

SIRS Knowledge Source (Ending 7/31/08)

Appropriate for middle and high school students, this database provides access to full-text articles and Internet resources from the following SIRS reference databases:

  • SIRS Researcher includes topics on business, family, global issues, health, human relations, and institutions.
  • SIRS Government Reporter includes historic and government documents, directories and almanacs.
  • SIRS Renaissance includes information about the arts and humanities.

    The SIRS suite of databases also includes suggested research topics within each category.

Testing and Education Reference Center

Contains online practice exams for college, grad school and career entrances. Also has e-book contents on test preparation for the same exams. Of special interest are the College and Graduate School search databases, which offer the ability to search for scholarships and financial aid.

World Book Online

Online, interactive version of the staple encyclopedia. This edition includes a Spanish Encyclopedia, Current Events Features, Today in History, Atlases, and an in-line definition feature (double-click on the word, the program's dictionary gives you a definition).
